Picture2018 Chairman's Choice Award: Cast Iron Facade, Ladd & Bush Bank Building ~ Holly Hayes
As we say in the closing line of each Salem History Matters episode, Salem is resplendent in historic treasures, both people and places. It's most appropriate that such distinguished resources should be honored every year. Salem's Historic Landmarks Commission (HLC) hosts a contest each spring, entitled "This Place Matters," soliciting submissions of photographs from the public of places the photographers determined should "matter" to all of us Salemites. The winners selected by the HLC are announced in May as part of Salem's National Historic Preservation Month events. Here are the other winning selections for 2018:

Best Historic Building: D.A. White Building ~ Becky Willhite

Best Historic Place: Mill Creek ~ Camron Settlemeier

Best Historic Neighborhood: Pomeroy & Keen Clock, Downtown ~ Holly Hayes

Youth-Best Place Category Co-Winner: Timber Frame Pavilion ~ Zach Person

Honorable Mention-Historic Building: Reed Opera House Ballroom ~ Kimberly Seabury

Honorable Mention-Historic Place: Thomas Kay Woolen Mill ~ Holly Hayes

Honorable Mention-Historic Neighborhood: State Street Corridor ~ Camron Settlemeier

Youth-Best Place Category Co-Winner: Springtime, Oregon State Capitol ~ Max Quintero
Are not these photos just amazing? Everyday sights captured through extraordinary perspectives! It was enlightening to hear the winners talk about their inspiration at the awards ceremony.  Plan to be there next year at the awards presentation by the HLC--always the third Thursday of May.
