As we say in the closing line of each Salem History Matters episode, Salem is resplendent in historic treasures, both people and places. It's most appropriate that such distinguished resources should be honored every year. Salem's Historic Landmarks Commission (HLC) hosts a contest each spring, entitled "This Place Matters," soliciting submissions of photographs from the public of places the photographers determined should "matter" to all of us Salemites. The winners selected by the HLC are announced in May as part of Salem's National Historic Preservation Month events. Here are the other winning selections for 2018: Are not these photos just amazing? Everyday sights captured through extraordinary perspectives! It was enlightening to hear the winners talk about their inspiration at the awards ceremony. Plan to be there next year at the awards presentation by the HLC--always the third Thursday of May. To view these great photographs in a larger format, check out this link to the City's website.
