February 26, 2015 Episode

Today's special guest was Hazel Patton, a long-time mover and shaker in the preservation of Salem's historic resources as well as being an experienced community activist.  Hazel was instrumental in nominating several neighborhoods for National Register recognition:  Court-Chemeketa Historic District, Salem Downtown Historic District, and the newer Oregon State Hospital Historic District.  The Riverfront Carousel was another of Hazel's community-building projects, as was the Union Street Trestle/Pedestrian Bridge.  Following through with her passion to preserve the unique buildings and grounds of the Oregon State Hospital, she is now involved with the new Museum of Mental Health located in the reconstructed Kirkbride Building there.  She talked with us about the artifacts of that era of mental health treatment which are housed in the museum, the archive of audio recordings they are building of stories shared by folks who lived in and around the hospital, and her memories of the filming of the "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" movie on the grounds (many of the movie props were donated to the Museum).  Hazel continues to work to enhance our community.  She is often seen briskly walking from her home in the Court-Chemeketa Historic District to and around downtown Salem.  If you stop her to chat a moment, it won't take long before you're infused with her enthusiasm and love for this community, too.

New Calendar
Jeanne and Lola are enthusiastic residents of the Grant Neighborhood area, Jeanne for many  years and Lola for about 10 years.  Jeanne told us about growing up in the neighborhood where both of her parents were also employed by neighborhood businesses, her dad with Cherry City Bakery whose delivery truck is shown here.  Lola spoke about her  love of Craftsman-style houses and how she has always been sketching examples of such until she found a living example of her sketch in the home once owned by the Paulus family.  Each spoke of their area as being a smaller, family-oriented neighborhood where neighbors know and greet each other, and where there was much diversity in house styles.  They were both enthusiastic about the calendar the neighborhood produced in partnership with the City's Heritage Neighborhood program which can be purchased from the website of the Grant Neighborhood Association.  Additionally, they are eagerly anticipating the publication of the architectural guide prepared by Professor Thomas Hubka and the university interns.  To view a draft of this guide, click here.

The Salem Historic Landmarks Commission (HLC) has some exciting projects this year! They have just launched their first photo education project called A Peek into Salem's Past on their new Twitter feed.  They will be posting a new historic photo every day. To check it out, follow them on Twitter

Another fun project they are working on with the Grant Neighborhood is a new Architectural Guidebook.  In an upcoming episode, we will be interviewing Professor Thomas Hubka, who has been working with several talented interns and the Grant Neighborhood to develop a new guidebook for residents and visitors to the Grant Neighborhood.  To see a draft of the guidebook, click

The HLC is continuing to offer their Residential Toolbox Grants, which are a great help to those who own historic homes here in Salem.  For more information please click
