Salem's Hollywood District: City's First Urban Renewal Project. The Hollywood District of northeast Salem was a self-supporting community at the edges of the late-1800s Highland Addition which grew up around the intersections of Fairgrounds Road, Portland Road, Tile Road, Hazel Avenue and others, meeting in a spoke fashion. In 1970, the area became the focus of Salem's first Urban Renewal project, dramatically redesigning the area to enhance its economic viability.

May was National Historic Preservation Month, and Salem did it up proud: a display of photographs of historic buildings taken by local citizens at the Capitol Building; a Historic Preservation Fair at the Capitol Mall to showcase area agencies and organizations active in the various facets of preserving Oregon's historic legacy; and a hands-on workshop on repairing historic windows using the historic houses at Willamette Heritage Center.
