January 31, 2019 Episode.

We've been out of the country for a few weeks, so we have lots to tell you about the shows that aired while I was away. One occurrence was the snow surprise. Yvonne Putze, executive director at Deepwood Museum & Garden shared this photo just a week after she joined us to talk about this special year at Deepwood Museum marking the 125th anniversary since Dr. Luke Port and his family moved into their newly constructed home in 1894.

Since Yvonne joined the Deepwood team a few years ago, she has headed up some changes that include the re-opening of the master bedroom suite on the first floor and the servants quarters on the second floor. Dr. Luke Port had limited mobility that precluded him from climbing the stairs to the private family rooms on the second floor, so he designed the master bedroom and bath to be located on the ground floor. Today, this space offers more accessibility for visitors, as well as a restroom for the guests at the frequent teas. Staff have developed other media tools to help those with limited mobility experience the home life of the period in this Queen Anne Victorian home. You'll also see the home's artifacts changing from visit to visit, just like you would experience if you were living in any home of the time.

Several events are planned to commemorate Deepwood's 125 years. The famous Teas will continue, with each Tea exploring life at home, in the city, and in the world for each decade of occupancy, beginning with the 1890s. In August, a festive birthday party with a theme of old-time county fairs will be held. Dr. Port was known for his grapes and Judge Bingham grew many vegetables, so attending the county fair would be a highly anticipated event each summer.

The traditional events the community has come to look forward to each year will still be available: the native plant sale in the spring, the Mother's Day teas, the Native Trail tours in summer, the Children's Halloween Party in the fall, and the Holiday Open House in December.  Another well-liked event also returns--the periodic History Talks. Two of the grandsons of the last family in the home were featured at the most recent Talk, reminiscing about their childhood spent here.

Anytime of the year is great to visit Deepwood's gardens. The native trails are open year-round and you'll find something blooming even in the midst of winter.  Check out their website or their Facebook page for more information--something is always happening there!
